Frequently Asked Questions

Neuropsychologists are experts in the relationship between brain structure and function. They assess cognitive skills (such as attention, memory, language, problem-solving and reasoning), as well as aspects of mood and behaviour. They work with clients who have brain injuries, neurological conditions, and cognitive impairments.
-
In your neuropsychology appointment you will complete comprehensive tests of cognition (attention, processing speed, language, memory, visuospatial skills, and executive functions). You may also complete questionnaires about mood and behaviour. Tests are administered via iPads, hard-copy forms, or verbally. You may also be asked to draw, write, or manipulate objects.
After your appointment your results will be scored and interpreted. Relevant health records will be reviewed. An individualised report will be completed and you will be invited to attend a feedback session, either in person, over the phone or via video link.

Some types of cognitive testing can be completed by different disciplines, including clinical psychologists, general psychologists, and occupational therapists. These assessments are typically briefer and are designed to answer specific types of questions, such as:
whether or not there is cognitive impairment that may require further investigation.
how cognitive problems impact academic skills.
whether the person has a neurodevelopmental condition, such as a learning disorder or ADHD.
Neuropsychological testing is a more comprehensive evaluation that uses standardised assessment tools to obtain data on brain function. Neuropsychologists can determine the nature, severity, and cause of cognitive problems and provide diagnoses of conditions affecting the brain (e.g., dementia, delirium, hepatic encephalopathy, traumatic brain injury, etc). They therefore not only answer “is there a problem” but also identify the nature of the problem and probable cause/s.
-
In your appointment/s you will complete a clinical interview and testing. For a standard assessment this takes around 3-4 hours. Medicolegal assessments are typically longer.
Depending on your needs, testing may be completed in a single day, or across multiple days.
At the end of the appointment a separate feedback session will be scheduled.
-
No, diagnostic testing for ADHD and Autism are not completed as standard practice, however screening tests may be administered and where elevated traits are suspected you may be referred on for further assessment.
-
Components of the neuropsychological assessment can be completed via video link, such as the clinical interview and feedback session.
Testing is typically performed face-to-face, however depending on the referral reason, part or all of the testing may also be completed via video link. Ask about this option at the time of booking.

Self-referrals are permitted.
In some circumstances, however, it may be preferable to have a GP review first to assess for medical causes of cognitive problems and to run testing. If you are not sure, make an enquiry and we can discuss your case further.
